Cubs Demote Ballesteros Following Slump

The Chicago Cubs have sent Moises Ballesteros back to their Iowa minor league affiliate, reflecting a significant slump at the plate. Ballesteros, who spent the early part of the season with the major league club, began the year as a hot hitter. In his initial 69 plate appearances, he posted an impressive .387 batting average with five home runs and 16 RBIs.

However, his performance has drastically fallen off since May. Ballesteros's batting average dropped to .141 with a 25.0 percent strikeout rate in his subsequent 96 plate appearances. This decline, combined with defensive shortcomings, particularly at catcher where he lacks elite defensive capabilities, has prompted the demotion. The Cubs will likely want to see a strong stretch of performance from him in Iowa before considering a return to the North Side.
