Cubs Acquire Pitching Depth Ahead of Deadline

As the trade deadline approaches, the Chicago Cubs have secured pitching depth by acquiring left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins. Garrett, a former seventh overall draft pick, is returning to the majors after recovering from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for part of the 2024 season and all of the 2025 campaign. He has primarily played with Miami's Triple-A affiliate this season.

The Marlins received Triple-A first baseman Jonathon Long and Double-A right-handed pitcher Jace Beck in exchange for Garrett. Miami has a surplus of pitching talent, making them open to dialogue with organizations like the Cubs, who are rich in hitting prospects. This transaction follows previous deals between the two franchises, including a trade last winter involving pitcher Edward Cabrera.
