Burnes' Rehab Delayed: Key Pitchers Nearing Return
2 Sep
Summary
- Corbin Burnes' MLB return is delayed beyond this week.
- Ryne Nelson and Zac Gallen are progressing from injuries.
- Gallen aims to pitch to live hitters soon, Nelson is a relief option.

Corbin Burnes will not rejoin the Arizona Diamondbacks' major league rotation this week as initially hoped. He is slated to pitch in a Bridge Camp game on Thursday to extend his pitch count, having thrown only 17 pitches in his recent rehab start with the Triple-A Reno Aces. Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Burnes' velocity, which sat in the low-90s, was not the primary concern for this decision.
Burnes' potential return could now occur in late September, possibly during the series against the Kansas City Royals (September 7-9) or the Texas Rangers (starting September 11). This marks his first potential outing since June 1, when he sustained an elbow injury requiring Tommy John surgery.
Additionally, pitchers Ryne Nelson and Zac Gallen are progressing from their respective elbow injuries. Gallen is nearing a return, scheduled to throw 60 pitches to live hitters on Friday. Nelson recently threw 21 pitches to live hitters and may be considered for a relief role once his pitch count is built up.
