Native Groups Condemn Commanders' New Logo

The Washington Commanders' recent unveiling of a new alternate logo featuring a spear has prompted significant backlash from Native American organizations and community leaders. The Association on American Indian Affairs expressed disappointment, stating the team should listen to Native peoples who have clearly communicated their opposition to such imagery.

This controversy follows the team's rebranding in 2022, after retiring a controversial former mascot in 2020. Native activist Suzan Harjo believes the team is being disingenuous, potentially aiming to appease those who wish to reinstate the previous, offensive nickname.

In contrast, the Native American Guardians Association applauded the logo, viewing it as an honoring of Native heritage within sports traditions. However, other groups like Not In Our Honor decried the move as a regression, asserting that the spear symbol has no place with the new brand.

Scholars and psychologists emphasize the potential harm of such imagery. Stephanie Fryberg's research indicates that Native-themed mascots and symbols inflict psychological damage on Native youth, reinforcing stereotypes and contributing to erasure. Historian Philip Deloria criticized the team's justification for the spear, calling it a meaningless attempt to rationalize a historically racist practice.

Commanders president Mark Clouse indicated the spear will remain a fixture, describing it as an integral part of the team's ecosystem. He acknowledged that not everyone will be pleased but assured that fan feedback is considered.
