The team has signed kicker Matthew Wright and elevated him from the practice squad to kick against his former team, the Chiefs, after ruling out their regular kicker Matt Gay due to a back injury.
In addition to Wright, the Commanders have also elevated defensive tackle Sheldon Day from the practice squad to provide depth, as their starter Daron Payne is dealing with a toe injury. The team has also released wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad.
Wright has previous experience filling in for the Chiefs, having played two games for them during the 2022 season and two more last season. He went a combined 10-for-10 on PATs and 10-for-13 on field goals, including a 4-for-4 performance in a 19-17 victory and a game-winning field goal that clinched the AFC West for the Chiefs in December 2024.
The Commanders are also dealing with injuries to their starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed two games earlier this season and then strained his hamstring in last week's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Marcus Mariota is set to start in Daniels' place against the Chiefs.
