Commander's Coach Fired After DWI Arrest

The Washington Commanders have terminated tight ends coach Ben Steele, days before the team's training camp is set to begin. This move follows an arrest made on June 7, where Steele was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He also faces charges for allegedly refusing a blood or breath test and obstructing an officer.

The team confirmed the firing with a brief statement, offering no further comment at this time. Reports suggest the termination is due to a violation of team policy. Steele was placed on leave after informing the team of his arrest, which subsequently led to the NFL being notified.

Steele, 48, was preparing for his first season with the Commanders after a three-year tenure with the Arizona Cardinals. During his time in Arizona, he was instrumental in developing tight end Trey McBride into one of the league's best. Steele also has prior coaching experience with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Atlanta Falcons.

This coaching change is part of a larger staff revamp by Head Coach Dan Quinn. The Commanders have already seen changes at offensive coordinator, with David Blough replacing Kliff Kingsbury, and defensive coordinator, with Daronte Jones stepping in for Joe Whitt Jr. Steele's replacement is expected to be announced soon.
