Colts Abandon Prized QB Prospect After Two Frustrating Seasons
19 Aug
Summary
- Colts give up on 2023 4th overall pick Anthony Richardson
- Richardson struggled to complete passes and read defenses
- Colts name veteran Daniel Jones as unquestioned starter for 2025

As of August 19th, 2025, the Indianapolis Colts have given up on their prized 2023 NFL Draft pick, quarterback Anthony Richardson. The 4th overall selection out of Florida, Richardson was viewed as a raw but highly athletic prospect when he entered the league. However, after two frustrating seasons as the Colts' starter, the team has decided to move on.
Through 15 starts over the past two years, Richardson has struggled mightily, completing just over 50% of his pass attempts and throwing more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (11). He has routinely misread defenses and failed to establish any consistent offensive flow for the Colts. While there have been occasional "wow" moments showcasing his physical tools, they have not been nearly enough to convince head coach Shane Steichen and GM Chris Ballard to continue developing him as the team's long-term solution at quarterback.
This week, the Colts have named veteran Daniel Jones as their unquestioned starter for the entirety of the 2025 season, barring injury. Jones, who was previously with the New York Giants, has also had his own struggles, throwing more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (10) over the past two years. However, the Colts' coaching staff seems to believe he provides a more reliable and consistent option under center compared to the inconsistent Richardson.
The decision to move on from Richardson so quickly is a significant blow for the young quarterback, who will now enter his fourth NFL season with even less development than expected. It remains to be seen if he will get another opportunity to prove himself elsewhere, or if this failed experiment in Indianapolis will ultimately define his professional career.
