Colorado DC Marve: Field Play Beats Booth

Colorado's defensive coordinator, Chris Marve, is opting to call plays from the sideline for the upcoming game against Georgia Tech on Thursday. While a coaching booth offers a distinct view and separation, Marve's decision is rooted in personal experience and research.

Marve cited a study indicating that play-caller location, whether in the booth or on the field, has a negligible impact on success rates. He personally feels more effective on the sideline, having spent 80-85% of his career there. This choice aligns with his tenure at Virginia Tech, where his 2023 defense ranked highly nationally.

His initial foray into the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams in 2025 preceded his move to Colorado. After former defensive coordinator Robert Livingston's departure, Marve was elevated to the coordinator role.

The decision to be on the sideline is particularly relevant for the Georgia Tech matchup, as the Yellow Jackets' offense is known for its strong running game. Effective communication and quick adjustments are paramount, and Marve's presence on the field aims to facilitate this.

Adding to his sideline presence, Marve continues to coach the linebackers directly, a group he sees as crucial to the defense's identity. He believes in looking his players in the eyes and understanding their perspectives, a connection he feels is vital for their development and performance. This approach emphasizes a fast, relentless, and physical defensive style.
