Cleveland Sirens: WNBA Roars Back in 2028!

Cleveland's new WNBA franchise will officially be known as the Cleveland Sirens, launching their inaugural season in 2028. The team's name and identity draw inspiration from Lake Erie and the region's forward-thinking spirit. President of Business Operations Allison Howard stated the name "Sirens" embodies a "sharp, unapologetic, fearless and relentless" ethos, reflecting the city and the advancement of women's basketball.

These new Cleveland Sirens will establish their home at Rocket Arena, sharing the venue with the NBA's Cavaliers. A dedicated 55,000-square-foot performance center is also being converted for the Sirens' exclusive use. This expansion brings the WNBA to 16 teams, following recent additions like the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire this season.

The development of the Sirens brand involved a 13-month process, including extensive community engagement. The team's logo and blue color palette are inspired by Lake Erie's gradients and also pay homage to the original Cleveland Rockers. Despite the new identity, the franchise plans to maintain connections with Rockers alumni.

While another professional women's team shares the "Sirens" name in the PWHL, Howard noted that differences in sport and market mitigate concerns. The franchise is also focusing on community partnerships, such as one with Cleveland Clinic to research female athletes, as they prepare for their 2028 debut.
