Clemson's Defense Shines in Spring Scrimmage
12 Mar
Summary
- New offensive coordinator's terminology felt familiar to Swinney.
- Defense is trending in the right direction with new additions.
- Washington is the standout player in camp so far.

Clemson's head coach Dabo Swinney evaluated the Tigers' first spring scrimmage on March 11, noting both positives and areas for improvement with the 2026 season opener against LSU approaching. The offensive unit, under new coordinator Chad Morris, showed signs of familiarity for Swinney, though player adjustments are ongoing.
Swinney described the offense as "average" during the scrimmage, specifically mentioning the quarterbacks. However, he expressed strong confidence in Morris's coaching ability and the team's potential to improve.
The defensive side of the ball, however, is already exceeding expectations. With most of the offseason transfer additions on defense, the unit is performing exceptionally well, with Swinney noting they are "way ahead of where we were at this time last year."
Key defensive standouts include the new safety room additions, Ronan Hanafin, Corey Myrick, and Jerome Carter, who are playing fast and tackling well. Cornerback Elliot Washington has been the team's best player in camp, making plays daily and forcing turnovers.
While kicker Nolan Hauser had a disappointing scrimmage performance, Swinney is looking forward to the spring game on March 28 and encouraged fans to attend to create a strong home-field environment.
