Clemson University's Board of Trustees has officially approved a new contract for assistant baseball coach Tyler Smarslok. The agreement spans three years, with an annual salary of $400,000, totaling $1.2 million through July 31, 2029. Smarslok is set to take on the critical roles of coordinating the team's defense and providing offensive assistance.
Coach Erik Bakich expressed enthusiasm for the hire, citing Smarslok's reputation as a premier defensive and baserunning coach. Smarslok replaces Nick Schnabel, who departed in August to establish a recruitment consulting firm. Smarslok brings experience from his time with the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals.
The contract includes a base salary of $360,000 and a $40,000 supplemental payment, along with a $45,000 signing bonus. Performance-based incentives up to $35,000 are also included, with a $10,000 bonus for winning the College World Series.
The Tigers are preparing for their season opener at the Shriners Children's College Showdown in Arlington, Texas, from February 19-21, 2027. This follows a challenging 2026 season where the team finished 31-26 and missed the NCAA tournament.
