Chess Legend Polgár Tipped for Hungary Presidency

Judit Polgár, celebrated as the greatest female chess player in history, is being considered for the position of Hungary's President. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Sunday, July 20, 2026, his plan to nominate the 49-year-old chess champion for the country's largely ceremonial presidency. Magyar described Polgár as an individual capable of embodying "the nation's unity."

Polgár, born in Budapest in 1976, achieved global recognition by competing against and defeating elite male chess players, including legends like Garry Kasparov. She secured the title of youngest grandmaster in 1991 at age 15 and remains the only woman to surpass the 2700 Elo rating barrier. Her career also included 26 consecutive years as the world's top-ranked female player before her retirement in 2014.

The upcoming presidential election in Hungary is decided by parliament, not the general electorate. Judit Polgár has not yet publicly confirmed whether she will accept the nomination. Her potential move to politics follows her recent commendation of Indian chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh for winning the 2025 FIDE Women's World Cup.
