Championship Play-offs: More Teams Vie for Glory!
5 Mar
Summary
- EFL clubs voted to expand play-offs from four to six teams.
- Teams finishing third to eighth will now compete for promotion.
- New one-legged quarter-finals will feature fifth versus eighth.

The English Football League (EFL) has announced a significant change to its Championship play-off system, set to be implemented from the upcoming season. In a decision driven by a vote among its clubs, the play-offs will now accommodate six teams instead of the previous four. This expansion means that teams finishing in positions third through eighth on the league table will be eligible to compete for a coveted spot in the Premier League.
The newly adopted format mirrors the system used in the National League. Under this structure, the clubs that secure third and fourth place will automatically advance directly to the play-off semi-finals. The teams finishing fifth and sixth will host their respective opponents in a one-legged quarter-final tie. Specifically, the fifth-placed team will play at home against the eighth-placed team, while the sixth-placed team will host the seventh-placed team. The semi-finals will continue to be contested over two legs, maintaining their traditional format. The showpiece final will still take place at Wembley Stadium at the end of May, concluding the promotion battle.
