Discussions surrounding the College Football Playoff's potential expansion are ongoing, with a 20-team format recently proposed but reportedly lacking significant traction. This concept, which would involve four play-in games to establish a 16-team bracket, was reportedly floated by ESPN. However, members of the CFP management committee, comprised of FBS commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director, expressed surprise and noted that discussions on this specific proposal were brief.

The committee's agenda on Monday, August 11, 2026, primarily focused on expanding the playoff field to either 16 or 24 teams. While the 20-team idea has surfaced before, it has not been seriously entertained. Opposition, particularly from the Big Ten conference, has stalled conversations on various expansion scenarios, even as ESPN, the CFP's broadcast rights holder, may be hesitant to fund a full 24-team expansion.
