Celtics' González: From Rookie Surprise to Star Potential

Hugo González is making notable strides following his rookie year with the Boston Celtics. He concluded his Summer League stint with a standout performance, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a victory. This offseason progress, which began before the Summer League, has been recognized by the Celtics organization.

González's commitment to development was evident as he joined the Spanish national team for FIBA qualifying games in July, where he scored 16 points against Denmark. This dedication was even observed by Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. The young player finished 13th in All-Rookie voting, proving his impact despite not matching the scoring of other rookies.

His importance to the Celtics was further highlighted when Brad Stevens reportedly refused to include González in trade discussions for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Assistant coach Amile Jefferson noted González's improved physicality and mobility, stating he can defend multiple positions and is a "pro" who has worked on all aspects of his game.

Last season, González averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds, often serving as a sparkplug off the bench. While his scoring efficiency, particularly from three-point range, needs improvement, González is expected to take a significant leap this upcoming season. He is also recognized for bringing energy and boosting team morale.
