Houston Astros star Carlos Correa's comeback attempt has been officially shut down for the current season. Manager Joe Espada confirmed Tuesday that Correa will not return as the team vies for a playoff spot. Correa had undergone surgery on his left ankle on May 11, with an initial recovery period estimated at six to eight months.
Although nearing a return and slated for rehabilitation games, increased activity caused inflammation in Correa's ankle. Espada explained that the buildup of training, including base running and swinging, aggravated the injury. Consequently, the decision was made for Correa to concentrate on being fully prepared for next season.
The Astros held a one-game lead in the AL West entering Tuesday night's game against the Royals. Espada expressed disappointment, acknowledging Correa's hard work and the unfortunate outcome of falling short of a return this year. He indicated that even a deep postseason run would not have allowed for Correa's participation.
Correa, who rejoined the Astros after a trade, was hitting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs this season before his injury. His contract includes salaries of $31.5 million for the current season, $30.5 million in 2027, and $30 million in 2028, with the Twins contributing financially through 2028.
