Punter Beats Cancer, Plays Final Season

Anthony Pecorella, the UMaine punter, is in his eighth college season, playing for the Black Bears after overcoming a rare cancer and a genetic immune disorder. He was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma in July 2023 and X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP) in February of an unspecified year. Pecorella chose to play one last season with his teammates before undergoing a bone marrow transplant.

To prepare for the transplant, he receives monthly immunoglobulin infusions at Boston Children's Hospital. Pecorella finds profound inspiration in the resilience of young children he encountered while undergoing chemotherapy on the pediatric ward. Their positive attitudes despite their own battles provide him with perspective and motivation for his daily practices and games.

Having previously played at the University of Maryland and Stony Brook, Pecorella transferred to UMaine for his final season. He is known for his strong performance, averaging 40.5 yards per punt in his first campaign with the Black Bears. His journey has deeply impacted his teammates and coaches, who view him as a significant source of inspiration and leadership.
