Cadillac's inaugural Formula 1 race in Melbourne concluded with exceeded expectations, according to CEO Dan Towriss. The team's debut saw Sergio Perez finish 16th, three laps behind the winner, while Valtteri Bottas retired his car after 15 laps to protect its power unit.
Despite the mixed on-track results, Towriss emphasized that team morale is high, fostering a collective hunger for improvement. He highlighted that both General Motors executives and team board member Mario Andretti were pleased with the weekend's performance.
The primary objectives for the debut were to demonstrate respectable speed and avoid costly mistakes. Towriss confirmed that the team made consistent progress from practice sessions through to the race, a key performance indicator for the nascent outfit.
Cadillac had prior knowledge they might not finish last, as competitors like Aston Martin faced technical issues and McLaren and Audi had cars fail to start. However, Towriss stated that external misfortunes did not alter his assessment of the team's own performance, focusing instead on closing the performance gap to rivals.
