Rookie QB Daniels Surges to Bucs' Backup Role

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made a notable decision by naming undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as the team's backup quarterback. Daniels secured the No. 2 position behind Baker Mayfield, following an impressive performance during training camp and the preseason. This development led to the release of veteran quarterback Jake Browning, who had been signed during the offseason.

The Buccaneers' confidence in Daniels is particularly significant given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Baker Mayfield's future with the team. Mayfield, 31, is entering the final season of his contract and has expressed feeling undervalued regarding potential long-term extension talks. General Manager Jason Licht has indicated optimism about reaching an agreement, but Mayfield's contract expires after the 2026 season, making him a free agent in 2027.

Daniels, 23, showcased his abilities in three preseason games, completing 27 of 44 passes for 239 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also contributed with 37 rushing yards and a touchdown. His performance included leading second-half comebacks against the Jets and Chiefs. Daniels had a notable college career at Kansas, where he set records for quarterback rushing touchdowns.
