Anzalone Reflects on Bucs Debut: 'I Want Plays Back'

Linebacker Alex Anzalone expressed dissatisfaction with his Tampa Bay Buccaneers debut, stating he desires to correct several plays from the recent 33-27 loss to the Bengals. Anzalone is stepping into a significant role, occupying the locker of the recently retired Lavonte David and taking on the responsibility of communicating defensive plays, a role David held for 14 seasons.

Despite generally smooth communication, the Bucs defense struggled as a collective unit. Anzalone noted that while individual efforts were present, the team did not "click" cohesively. Poor field position, partly due to four lost fumbles by the offense, significantly hampered the defense. Notably, the team had difficulty containing Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki, who recorded five catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

Anzalone, who signed with the Bucs in March, was drawn to Tampa Bay due to his college ties at the University of Florida and his wife's Clearwater roots. His upcoming game at Raymond James Stadium against the Browns will feel like a homecoming. However, significant improvements are needed in tackling and pass coverage, particularly against running backs and tight ends, issues that also plagued the team last season.

Head coach Todd Bowles described Anzalone's first game as "rusty," specifically mentioning missed tackles and zone coverage lapses. In contrast, rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter achieved a historic feat by recording both a sack and an interception return for a touchdown in his professional debut, also leading the team with 11 tackles. Anzalone, while acknowledging Trotter's strong performance, remains focused on his own need to improve.
