Bryant Haines, Indiana's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, has been honored with the Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation's outstanding assistant coach. Haines, 40, secured the award over four other finalists, including prominent defensive coordinators from other major programs. This victory makes Haines the first recipient of the Broyles Award in Indiana University's history and only the seventh from the Big Ten conference. His innovative defensive schemes were instrumental in the Hoosiers' exceptional performance throughout the season. Haines' defense was a dominant force, ranking second nationally in scoring defense, allowing only 11.7 points per game. They also excelled in rushing defense, conceding just 77.2 yards per game on the ground. Furthermore, Indiana's defense led the nation in turnovers forced with 30 and ranked third in tackles for loss per game with 8.1. The Hoosiers' overall defensive prowess was evident in their fourth-best national ranking in total defense, limiting opponents to an average of 266 yards per game. This defensive excellence was a key factor in Indiana achieving a program record of 46 sacks and securing their first national championship. Haines' historic achievement places him among an elite group of coaches to win both the Broyles Award and a national title in the same season. His contract extension in mid-December reflects his significant value to the program.
