Browns Stick with Shedeur Sanders Despite Preseason Struggles
24 Aug
Summary
- Browns never planned to cut Shedeur Sanders despite preseason performance
- Sanders was a 5th round draft pick, not expected to start immediately
- Browns have 4 QBs on roster, including veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Kenny Pickett

As of August 24th, 2025, the Cleveland Browns' quarterback depth chart remains unchanged following their preseason finale. Despite speculation that the team could make changes, the Browns have been aligned with the "keeping four quarterbacks" plan all along.
The Browns' quarterback competition this preseason included veteran Joe Flacco, rookie Kenny Pickett, and two young prospects in Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. While Sanders struggled in the final preseason game, going 3-for-6 for 14 yards and taking five sacks, the team never seriously considered cutting him.
The Browns likely knew Flacco would be the starter from the moment they signed the 40-year-old. Pickett, a solid trade acquisition, was brought in to provide veteran competition. And in the draft, the Browns decided they had value they liked in both Gabriel in the third round and Sanders in the fifth.

Despite Sanders' name being involved in trade and cut speculation, that never really made sense for the Browns. They invited a firestorm by drafting Sanders after his NFL Draft free fall, and cutting him after just a couple of months would have been an odd decision. One bad preseason game was not going to ruin Sanders' career, as he had a strong outing in the first week as well.
Going forward, Sanders still has work to do to get ahead of Gabriel on the depth chart, but the Browns remain committed to developing the young quarterback. As of August 24th, 2025, the Browns' quarterback room remains intact, with Shedeur Sanders still part of their plans.
