Browns Rookie QBs Sidelined by Injuries Ahead of Eagles Preseason Game
16 Aug
Summary
- Rookie QB Kenny Pickett out with hamstring injury
- Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders impresses but sustains oblique injury
- Dillon Gabriel may start if healthy, otherwise Tyler Huntley will play

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in their second preseason game on August 16, 2025, the team's rookie quarterback situation has become a cause for concern. Last week, both Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel missed the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers due to hamstring injuries.
In their absence, it was another rookie, Shedeur Sanders, who stepped up and impressed, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14 passes. However, Sanders' strong performance was short-lived, as he sustained an oblique injury during a joint practice session with the Eagles on Wednesday.
Pickett's hamstring ailment has continued to hinder his progress, as he was only able to participate in limited drills this week, throwing just six passes between 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 sessions. The Browns are hopeful that Pickett will be able to return to full fitness ahead of their third and final preseason game next week, but his status for the upcoming matchup against the Eagles remains uncertain.

If Dillon Gabriel is deemed fit enough to play, he is expected to start against Philadelphia. However, if Gabriel is unable to suit up, the Browns will turn to Tyler Huntley to lead the offense. The game is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, at 1 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on NFL Network.
