Broncos Trade First-Round Pick for Waddle
9 Apr
Summary
- Broncos lack a first-round pick for the third time in five years.
- Jaylen Waddle acquired via trade, costing Denver's No. 30 pick.
- Past second-round picks have yielded Pro Bowl talent for the team.

The Denver Broncos will forgo a first-round selection in the upcoming draft, marking the third instance in five years. This comes after acquiring wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in March, a move that cost the team their No. 30 overall pick. General Manager George Paton expressed his personal reluctance to trade away first-round picks.
The acquisition of Waddle is the Broncos' most significant offseason move, with Tycen Anderson being the only other player brought in from outside the organization. The team assessed that Waddle's current ability and potential impact surpass that of the players they projected to be available at pick No. 30.
This decision alters the team's draft approach, as they also traded away their third-round pick in the Waddle deal. Denver may look to trade back into the first round if a top prospect falls, but the more likely scenario is waiting until the second round, similar to 2022 and 2023. In those years, their earliest selections at No. 64 and No. 63 respectively, yielded Pro Bowl players like edge rusher Nik Bonitto and wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.
The Broncos currently hold seven picks, with their earliest being No. 62 overall. Their only selections in the upper half of any round are two fourth-round picks. Management emphasizes a patient approach, aiming to build the best possible team by the end of June.
