Tim Lewis, the NBA's first British-born coach, has returned to the Minnesota Timberwolves in an expanded role focused on offensive strategy and player development. Lewis, originally from Saint Asaph, Wales, boasts a global coaching career, having led national teams for Thailand and Qatar and coached in Germany, Belgium, Canada, the United States, and Panama. He also recently coached the Eneos Sunflowers in Japan, leading them to the Empress Cup in January.
His coaching journey includes over 15 years with England and Great Britain age groups, where he assisted current Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch during the London 2012 Olympics. Lewis and Finch share a long-standing friendship and professional relationship spanning 25 years. Lewis's previous tenure with the Timberwolves included a stint with their G League team, the Iowa Wolves, during Covid.
This season, Lewis will collaborate with offensive lead Pablo Prigioni to devise game plans aimed at maximizing offensive potential, particularly with new acquisitions like LaMelo Ball. Ball's partnership with Anthony Edwards is expected to create a potent backcourt duo. The Timberwolves are targeting the NBA championship in 2027, with Lewis emphasizing the importance of achieving 50-plus wins to secure a high playoff seed.
Lewis acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the current NBA landscape but identifies San Antonio and Philadelphia as potential contenders alongside Minnesota. He believes an NBA title would be a monumental achievement for Minneapolis, a city that has patiently awaited such success since the franchise's inception in 1989.
