GB's Unconquerable Olympic Winter Sports
12 Feb
Summary
- Britain struggles in sports like luge, biathlon, ski jumping, and speed skating.
- Past Olympic efforts in these niche sports yielded poor results.
- Factors like environmental changes affect participation in some sports.

Great Britain has historically struggled to find success in a range of Winter Olympic sports, with many disciplines remaining seemingly unconquerable. Sports such as luge, biathlon, ski jumping, Nordic Combined, and speed skating have presented significant challenges for British athletes.
In luge, a notable early competitor was disqualified for not finishing feet-first, and the best result achieved was 15th place. Biathlon has seen over two dozen British participants since 1960, yet with little success. Ski jumping had a brief moment with Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, whose performances led to stricter qualifying criteria.
Nordic Combined, a blend of ski jumping and cross-country, has only seen one British competitor, who finished 45th in 1936. Speed skating once had multiple participants from East Anglia's frozen fens, but the decline of frozen waterways has diminished its popularity, with only a few athletes competing recently.
