With their pitching staff facing significant injury challenges, the Atlanta Braves are promoting right-hander Owen Murphy for his major-league debut. Murphy, identified as the Braves' 11th-best prospect, is scheduled to join the team on Monday and is expected to pitch out of the bullpen.
The 22-year-old pitcher achieved a 3.88 ERA with 65 strikeouts and 20 walks over 60 1/3 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett. He began his season with five starts for Double-A Columbus. The Braves originally selected Murphy with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.
Murphy's journey includes a Tommy John surgery in 2024, from which he made a successful return in 2025, continuing to perform well. He features a three-pitch mix, including a 91-92 mph fastball with a flat approach, an 80s mph slider, and a 70s mph curveball.
Murphy's call-up fills a roster spot vacated by Martín Pérez, who was placed on the injured list with a left forearm contusion. Pérez sustained the injury when hit by a comebacker during Sunday's game. Additionally, JR Ritchie was recalled after securing a save Saturday, while Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment.
