Aiyuk has expressed a strong desire to join the Washington Commanders, citing his personal connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels. He publicly requested a release from the 49ers in June 2026.
On July 3, 2026, Aiyuk posted on Instagram that he had not received any money from the team in 17 months, accusing them of voiding his guarantees and refusing a trade. He feels he is being held captive.

The trade deadline on November 10, 2026, is a significant date, as the 49ers could deny his reinstatement request if he waits until after it passes. Aiyuk has stated he will not seek reinstatement.
Aiyuk, a former All-Pro, is choosing to sit out the prime of his career over this dispute, a decision that has drawn criticism.
