Bills Backup QB Battle: Trubisky Edges Out White

As of August 25, 2025, the Buffalo Bills have determined that Mitch Trubisky will serve as the primary backup to star quarterback Josh Allen for the second consecutive season. The team has reportedly released Mike White, who had been competing with Trubisky for the role.

Trubisky, a former No. 2 overall draft pick, entered the preseason as the favorite to retain his position as Allen's understudy. Over the course of the exhibition games, Trubisky outperformed White, averaging 7.4 yards per pass and completing 61.5% of his attempts. In contrast, White struggled, completing only 50% of his passes for 6.9 yards per attempt.

While White has shown the ability to stretch the field, he lacks the extensive NFL experience that Trubisky has accumulated over the years. Trubisky owns a 31-26 record as a starter, compared to White's seven career starts and two wins.

The Bills must finalize their 53-man roster by the August 26 deadline. White's future with the team remains uncertain, as the Bills may choose to stash him on the practice squad again or potentially release him, leaving him open to offers from other teams.

Regardless, Trubisky's retention as the Bills' backup quarterback ensures continuity and a familiar presence behind Allen, who is coming off an MVP season. The team appears comfortable with Trubisky's playing style, which more closely resembles Allen's than White's.
