Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. She was wounded in a shooting that occurred inside the couple's home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday night.
Reid confirmed that Mia Bieniemy, 57, is showing steady improvement and has made progress since being in the ICU. Eric Bieniemy is currently with his wife during her recovery. The Chiefs' coaching staff is staying in touch with him.
Her 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. His next court date is scheduled for August 31.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, holds a high-profile assistant coaching position with the Chiefs, leading an offense that features quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. It is currently unknown when he will rejoin the team for their upcoming exhibition and regular season games.
