In a thrilling PIAA 1A softball playoff opener on Monday, June 1, Berlin Brothersvalley secured a narrow 2-0 victory against Carmichaels. Junior pitcher Elena Ritchey was the star, allowing only two hits and striking out 12 batters in a masterful performance.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Elsie Barna singled, advanced on a stolen base and a teammate's hit, then scored on a fielding error after a bunt. Berlin added an insurance run in the sixth when Ritchey singled and was moved into scoring position by Elsie Barna, later driven in by Callie Ritchey's clutch hit.
This significant PIAA win is only the second in the softball program's history. Berlin Brothersvalley will now face District 10 champion Cambridge Springs in a rematch of last season's quarterfinal game, aiming to continue their playoff run.
