Bengaluru Marathon: Water Shortages, Chaos Plague Runners
28 Sep
Summary
- Marathon organizers faced criticism for inadequate water supply and poor crowd management.
- Participants reported a lack of water stations for extended distances.
- Organizers acknowledged lapses and pledged improvements for future events.
The 13th edition of the Wipro Bengaluru Marathon, held on Sunday, has drawn widespread criticism from its over 4,500 participants due to severe logistical failures. Runners reported a critical lack of drinking water along the route, with some stretches offering no hydration for up to 10 kilometers. This deficiency, particularly during challenging parts of the course, led to participant distress and safety concerns, with some resorting to purchasing their own water from scarce open shops.
Beyond the water shortage, participants also highlighted issues with insufficient toilet facilities, leading to long queues and further discomfort. Crowd management was also cited as problematic, with concerns about overcrowding creating bottlenecks, especially near the finish area. These recurring issues have led to disappointment, with some participants noting a lack of improvement from previous years.
In response to the feedback, the Chairman and Managing Director of NEB Sports acknowledged organizational lapses. He stated that while water was served in reusable cups to adhere to green principles, there were delays in refilling. The organizers plan to consider distributing water bottles in future editions and will analyze all participant feedback to implement necessary improvements, aiming to ensure a better experience for all runners.
