19 Jul
Summary
- Benfica seeks Yves Bissouma on a free transfer after his Tottenham contract expired.
- Bissouma aims to revive his career after a challenging final season with Tottenham.
- Tottenham faces frustration over losing a talented player for no transfer fee.
Benfica has initiated contact with Yves Bissouma, who became a free agent this summer, exploring what could be a strategic market acquisition. The Portuguese club views the midfielder as a high-upside opportunity, given his Premier League experience and past displays of athleticism and technical skill. Although his time at Tottenham was marked by inconsistency and availability issues, Benfica may offer him a platform for career rejuvenation.
Bissouma's potential move is driven by opportunity and timing, with Benfica hoping to secure a player of Champions League caliber for free. This situation evokes frustration for Tottenham supporters, who see a talented player departing without a transfer fee, potentially benefiting another club. It also highlights broader squad-building challenges for Tottenham, with several recent signings showing promise but lacking the necessary consistency.
Negotiations between Benfica and Bissouma are expected to continue in the coming days, with rival interest also a possibility. The midfielder's memorable performance in the 2025 Europa League final victory over Manchester United underscores his potential impact. If the transfer is completed, Benfica believes they are gaining a valuable asset, while Tottenham must confront the reality of unfulfilled potential.
