Bears QB Williams Playing Free, GM Poles Confident

Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles remains optimistic about the team's prospects for defending their NFC North title, despite recent trades and injuries. A key factor in this confidence is the continued development of quarterback Caleb Williams. Poles noted that Williams, in his second year, is playing with more joy and freedom, a sentiment echoed by coach Ben Johnson.

Johnson described Williams as composed and more serious, a change observed by his teammates. However, the Bears' secondary is a notable concern heading into the season. Nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon is still recovering from an offseason calf injury and has not practiced during training camp, adding to previous injury issues. Safety Coby Bryant is expected to be out until at least December.

In defensive line moves, the Bears traded Gervon Dexter for draft capital, creating opportunities for younger defensive tackles Jordan van den Berg and Jayden Loving. This decision was based on the performance of these young players and the team's confidence in its current talent level at the position. Other players like Grady Jarrett and Kentavius Street are also expected to contribute.
