Ball boy's hearing damaged by stadium explosion

A 16-year-old Portsmouth ball boy has suffered significant hearing impairment in one ear following the explosion of a missile thrown from the stands during Sunday's heated south coast derby against Southampton at Fratton Park. The young ball retriever, Hayden Rogers, was near the pitch when the object detonated a few feet away, causing temporary hearing loss and a severe headache, despite not being directly struck.

Club medics provided immediate care, and subsequent checks indicated the injured ear is still clouded, preventing a full assessment for perforation. While doctors suspect no critical damage due to the absence of excruciating pain, the ear remains muffled and sore from the blast. Club officials have been very supportive throughout the ordeal.

The incident has had a clear emotional impact, with Hayden struggling with sleep due to replaying the event. Despite this, his dedication to his role remains, as he has already asked about his availability for the next match. Another 15-year-old boy was also injured by a thrown crutch during the game.

Portsmouth FC is actively investigating the incidents with Hampshire Police, reviewing CCTV footage and urging anyone with information to come forward. Five arrests have been made in connection with the game. The club faces a warning from the FA regarding future conduct, with potential penalties beyond financial sanctions for further breaches.
