Summary
- Andre Ayew blames Luis Suarez's handball for denying Africa World Cup semi-final spot.
- Ayew expressed belief Ghana would have reached the 2010 final after beating Uruguay.
- Suarez refused to apologize for the handball incident in a 2022 rematch.

Andre Ayew, speaking on the Obi One Podcast recently, reflected on the controversial 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match between Ghana and Uruguay. Ayew expressed that Luis Suarez's handball on the goal line, which prevented a likely goal, was a moment that "killed a lot of hopes, not just from Ghana, but the whole continent." He recounted the strong belief within the Ghanaian squad that they would defeat Uruguay and proceed to face the Netherlands in the semi-finals, with aspirations of reaching the final.
Ayew, who was a spectator in the stands during the match held on July 2, 2010, described his youthful anger and disbelief at Suarez's actions. Despite the subsequent miss of a crucial penalty by Asamoah Gyan, Ayew emphasized that his teammates did not blame Gyan, recognizing him as instrumental in their journey to that stage. Gyan, the team's designated penalty taker, had performed exceptionally throughout the tournament before the pivotal moment.
The match itself ended 1-1 after extra time, leading to a penalty shootout which Uruguay won 4-2. Notably, during a 2022 World Cup rematch, Suarez maintained he did not regret the handball, as he received a red card for it and did not miss the penalty himself. Ayew admitted to still watching replays of the match but avoids the penalty shootout due to Ghana's history in such tie-breakers.
