Rifle shooter Avtar Nanrey achieves historic Canadian double

In August 2026, Avtar Nanrey achieved a career-defining moment at the 142nd Canadian Fullbore National Championship. He claimed both the esteemed Governor General's Prize and the Canadian Gold Cross Grand Aggregate, a rare double victory. Nanrey is only the second Canadian marksman in history to secure both prestigious titles concurrently at the national championship. His remarkable achievement underscores years of dedication and a significant return to the sport after a long absence. Nanrey's shooting journey commenced in India with the Army Cadets in 2005, where he won a championship in his first competition.

Following his early success, Nanrey stepped away from competitive shooting for over a decade. He resumed his passion in Canada in 2021, with support from the Ontario Rifle Association, demonstrating the value of experience and persistence in precision sports. His return saw rapid progress, culminating in his historic win at the 2026 national championship. This achievement is also significant for the Canadian shooting community, highlighting inclusive pathways and the potential for newcomers to excel at the highest levels of sport.

Fullbore rifle shooting demands exceptional skill, focusing on technical precision, environmental awareness, and mental discipline. Competitors must master variables like breathing, body position, trigger control, and external factors such as wind and distance. Nanrey's victory, particularly his near-perfect performance in the Governor General's Prize and his high score of 691.65 in the Grand Aggregate, showcases his ability to consistently perform under pressure across multiple demanding stages of competition. His success also includes winning the Lieutenant Governor's Prize at the Ontario championship earlier in 2026.
