Auburn Football's Uphill Battle Under Freeze's $16.25M Buyout
28 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Auburn's 16-10 loss to Texas A&M on Sept. 27 brings Freeze's record to 14-16 in 30 games
- Auburn has not had a winning season since 2020 and has not won a bowl game since 2018
- Freeze's buyout is around $16.25 million if Auburn fires him without cause

As of September 28, 2025, the Hugh Freeze experiment at Auburn University has yet to gain traction for the Tigers' football program. Following a 16-10 loss to Texas A&M on September 27, Auburn's record under Freeze now stands at 14-16 in 30 games, with the team also falling to 5-13 in SEC play.
The Tigers have struggled to find success in recent years, having not posted a winning season since 2020 and not winning a bowl game since 2018, when they defeated Purdue in the Music City Bowl. This lack of progress has left many Auburn fans disappointed, as the program has not met the high standards they expect.
Despite opening the season with wins over Baylor, Ball State, and South Alabama, Auburn has now lost back-to-back SEC games to Oklahoma and Texas A&M, with quarterback issues continuing to plague the team. The departure of men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl earlier this week has only added to the uncertainty surrounding the athletic department.
As Auburn considers its options, the hefty $16.25 million buyout in Freeze's contract looms large. The university would be required to pay Freeze 75% of the remaining payments on his deal, which runs through January 2029, if they were to fire him without cause. This significant financial commitment could complicate any potential coaching change, as the Tigers look to turn their fortunes around and restore the program to its former glory.
