In the past year, social media abuse was directed at over 85% of men's tennis players, leading the ATP to block a substantial 234,000 comments. This initiative, part of the ATP's Safe Sport program, utilized AI-enabled moderation and specialist threat assessment to analyze over 3.7 million comments across various channels. The program successfully identified and removed more than 284,000 abusive comments in real time, with over 162,000 of those categorized as severe abuse being hidden during its initial year of operation.
Player welfare is a primary focus for the ATP's safeguarding efforts. Preventing over 234,000 abusive comments from reaching players and fans highlights the program's tangible impact. The ATP stated that online abuse has no place in tennis and will continue to invest in technology and expertise to protect athletes. This commitment extends to working with authorities to hold perpetrators accountable. Many athletes, including tennis players, face anonymous online abusers, some of whom are identified as bettors. Other tennis organizations, such as the WTA, the All England Club, and the United States Tennis Association, have also launched monitoring services. Additionally, the French Open has made AI-powered software available to help players block online harassment and hate speech.
