Cardinals Defense: Same Old Struggles in 2025?

The Arizona Cardinals are heading into the 2025 NFL season with persistent defensive challenges, echoing last year's struggles. The team allowed 30 or more points in six of its final nine games in 2025, highlighting significant defensive frailties. Despite retaining defensive coordinator Nick Rallis, a promising 33-year-old coach, the preseason has offered little solace, with opponents again scoring over 30 points in two games.

Fundamental issues remain, particularly in third-down defense and run containment. The Cardinals ranked 25th in rushing yards allowed, with their front seven frequently failing to stop opposing backs. Injuries plagued the run defense, but problems with tackling and point-of-attack execution were evident. These issues persisted through the preseason, with nearly 140 rushing yards conceded per game.

The defense's third-down performance is alarming, allowing opponents a 61.1% conversion rate. If sustained over a full season, this would rank among the worst in NFL history. While the offense has shown improvement in finishing drives, the defense continues to allow numerous first downs on third downs, often due to penalties and short-passing schemes.
