Argentina Claims FIFA No. 1 Ranking Ahead of World Cup

Argentina has reclaimed the top position in FIFA's men's world rankings, marking their return to the No. 1 spot for the first time since July 2025. This achievement comes just as the World Cup is set to begin. Defending champions France have consequently dropped two places, now sitting at third in the standings.

The rankings are meticulously calculated using the Elo model, a system developed by physicist Arpad Elo. This model assigns numerical scores to teams, which are adjusted based on wins, losses, relative team strength, match importance, and expected outcomes.

Several other nations have also seen shifts in their positions. France, England, Portugal, and Brazil occupy the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth places, respectively. Morocco, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany complete the top 10. The United States men's national team is ranked 17th, while Mexico has risen to 14th. Notably, Italy, ranked 12th, is the highest-ranked team not participating in the World Cup.
