Argentina FA asks fans to accept World Cup loss

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has urged its supporters to accept Spain's 2026 FIFA World Cup final victory. This plea follows a viral online petition that collected over 101,613 signatures, demanding a replay of the match due to alleged controversial officiating.

Despite the petition's claims of a corrupt referee, no evidence has emerged to substantiate these allegations. FIFA regulations stipulate that replays are only considered under extraordinary circumstances, not in response to disagreements with refereeing decisions.

AFA president Claudio Tapia publicly distanced the federation from the replay calls. He acknowledged Spain's superiority in the 1-0 extra-time win and stressed the importance of accepting defeat with grace, a key aspect of elite sports.

Tapia also defended the national team's efforts throughout the tournament and cautioned fans against misinformation. Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni echoed these sentiments, stating Spain was the better team on the day.

While the debate continues online, FIFA has not indicated any intention to review the World Cup final's result. Their current investigation focuses on post-match altercations involving Argentina players.
