Arctic Surfing: Chasing Waves in Frozen Barents Sea
19 Mar
Summary
- Surfers experienced extreme polar vortex with temperatures dropping rapidly.
- Near frostbite incident occurred after a long trek through snow.
- The Barents Sea offers unique, crowd-free surfing opportunities year-round.

Surfer Dylan Graves described the Barents Sea in Norway as feeling like an "ice planet from 'Star Wars'" after experiencing a severe polar vortex. Temperatures dropped significantly, leading to Graves losing feeling in his extremities and fearing frostbite during an hour-long walk back to their vehicle.
Despite the extreme cold and limited daylight in Finnmark during December, the allure of uncrowded waves drew Graves and fellow surfer Tim Latte. Latte, a Scandinavian local, embraced the challenging winter conditions, finding them preferable to crowded warmer surf destinations.
Their expedition, documented for Graves' YouTube series "Weird Waves," explored Arctic Sea shelves bordering Finland and Russia. The region is also home to the Indigenous Sámi people, with Graves finding experiences like receiving reindeer heart a unique cultural element of the trip.
