Anthony Smith: The Unicorn of Big Ten Defense

The 16th annual Cleveland.com poll of Big Ten Conference reporters has named Gophers defensive end Anthony Smith as its preseason defensive player of the year. Smith, a redshirt senior, received 26 votes, narrowly edging out competitors. Last fall, he led the conference with 12 1/2 sacks and was second in tackles for lost yards.

Smith, standing at 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, is often described as a power rusher. However, he recently stated his preference to be classified solely as a 'pass rusher,' aspiring to be a 'unicorn' on the field. Gophers quarterback Drake Lindsey also garnered one vote for preseason offensive player of the year.
