Mexican Rocky's Final Title Shot?

Seven years after becoming the first fighter of Mexican descent to win the world heavyweight championship, Andy Ruiz Jr. is embarking on a final campaign for the title.

His historic upset victory over Anthony Joshua in 2019 was followed by a swift loss of his belts just six months later, attributed to partying and lack of preparation. Ruiz turns 37 next week and has since experienced a period of fluctuating weight and injuries.

Ruiz has reunited with his initial trainer, Manny Robles, a partnership that began over piña coladas in Tulum and signifies a renewed dedication. Robles confirms Ruiz has been training consistently for the past year.

At his recent weigh-in, Ruiz was a notably lighter 254.3lb, his lightest since 2018. He previously underwent surgeries on his knee and rotator cuff, and broke his hand.

The heavyweight division is currently fragmented, with multiple champions holding different belts, creating potential pathways for a former champion like Ruiz. A win could propel him back into contention, potentially even for a rematch with Joshua.

Ruiz faces Damian Knyba next, an opponent who represents a significant height and reach advantage. This fight is seen as a crucial test of Ruiz's ambition to reclaim a world title, as promoter Eddie Hearn believes he still possesses the necessary skills.
