Trans Athlete Cleared for Elite Cricket by 2027

Anaya Bangar has described her clearance for elite women's cricket by Cricket Australia as an "incredibly emotional" development. Effective from March 2027, this decision makes her eligible to compete in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), a prospect she had feared would be impossible following her transition. Bangar stressed that while eligibility is a significant step, it does not guarantee a WBBL contract, as she must still impress a franchise with her performance.

Bangar is currently permitted to participate in Premier Cricket competitions across Australia. This interim period allows her to focus on improving her batting, bowling, fielding, and fitness to meet the required standards for elite play. She noted that the possibility of facing Indian players, whom she grew up watching and playing against, would add another layer of emotional significance to her potential return to the sport.

Cricket Australia has confirmed that Bangar's March 2027 eligibility determination will remain unaffected by any subsequent amendments to their transgender and gender-diverse player policy. Bangar hopes her journey will contribute to a broader discussion on fairness and inclusion for transgender athletes within sports organizations.
