Analyst Warns Orioles: Don't Trade Away Star Catcher Rutschman Yet

As the Baltimore Orioles' disappointing 2025 MLB season comes to a close, the organization faces several critical offseason decisions, including the future of star catcher Adley Rutschman. The 27-year-old Rutschman, a former number one overall pick, has two years remaining with the team before becoming a free agent.

Complicating matters is the fact that rookie catcher Samuel Basallo has already been given a long-term contract, despite not even being at the MLB level for a full month. This suggests the Orioles view Basallo as their long-term answer behind the plate. However, analyst Dayn Perry of CBS Sports believes Baltimore should keep Rutschman around for at least another year.

Perry argues that Rutschman's offensive production has declined since his rookie season, and keeping him could allow him to regain some trade value. Additionally, the Orioles could potentially split catching duties between Rutschman and Basallo in 2026, with one playing first base or designated hitter when not behind the plate. This would allow the team to maximize the value of both young catchers as they aim to return to contention.

While the Orioles are open to trading Rutschman, Perry cautions that they should wait until he can demonstrate more offensive consistency. With Rutschman currently on the injured list, the team will have to weigh his long-term potential against any immediate trade offers they may receive this offseason.
