Alysa Liu has made history by winning the individual Olympic gold medal in figure skating, the first American woman to achieve this in 24 years. Her performance on Thursday secured her the top spot, following a strong free skate program.
Liu's journey includes a notable hiatus; she retired from the sport in 2022 at the age of 16. This break allowed her to pursue other interests, including travel. However, in 2024, Liu returned to competitive skating with renewed vigor.
Her comeback has been remarkable. Since returning, Liu became a world champion in 2025, an achievement not seen by an American woman since 2006. This Olympic gold solidifies her place as the eighth American woman to win this prestigious title.
