Calgary businessman and philanthropist Alvin G. Libin passed away on Monday afternoon. Libin was born in Calgary in 1931 and became one of the five individuals who purchased the Calgary Flames in 1994.
By 2012, Libin and his partners had become majority owners of the Calgary Stampeders, leading to the renaming of Calgary Flames Limited Partnership to Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation (CSEC). As of 2026, CSEC owns the Flames, Stampeders, Calgary Hitmen, Calgary Wranglers, Calgary Roughnecks, and the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Beyond sports, Libin had an extensive philanthropic career, serving on numerous boards, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Calgary Foothills Hospital. His impactful community work and contributions to medical research were recognized with the Order of Canada in 2001, among other distinctions.
At the time of his passing, Libin was the President and CEO of Balmon Investments Ltd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona, in 2006.
