Summary
- Altuve and Correa will not play in the World Baseball Classic.
- Players couldn't secure insurance for their contracts.
- Both players expressed disappointment about missing the event.

Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, key players for Houston, have been forced to withdraw from the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 5-17. Both athletes were unable to secure the necessary insurance coverage for their lucrative contracts, making participation too risky.
Correa, set to earn $31 million this season, was slated to represent Puerto Rico. Altuve, with a contract valued at $33 million in 2026, had aimed to play for Venezuela. Correa voiced his disappointment, noting his extensive offseason preparation for the event.
Astros owner Jim Crane reportedly discussed the situation with Correa, emphasizing a focus on the upcoming MLB season and team performance, especially after a season marked by numerous injuries. Altuve himself missed the start of the 2023 season due to a fractured thumb sustained during the last World Baseball Classic.
